A new support group at University Hospital of North Durham is giving patients living with and beyond colorectal cancer the chance to meet others, share experiences and access peer support.

The group was created after patients said they wanted an opportunity to connect with people who had been through similar experiences. Its sessions provide an informal and supportive setting where attendees can meet over a hot drink and offer encouragement to one another.

Support and information for patients

The group’s third session took place on Friday 11 September at the hospital. Patients were also joined by Liz Tallon from the University Hospital of North Durham Macmillan Support Centre.

Ms Tallon provided information about the support available to patients through the Macmillan Support Centre, adding a further source of practical guidance alongside the peer support offered by the group.

The three sessions held so far have received positive feedback, with patients valuing the chance to meet and support one another. The initiative is being led with support from the Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist team.

Next session planned before Christmas

The clinical nurse specialist team is preparing to welcome patients to the group’s next meeting, which is due to take place just before Christmas. The trust has not provided an exact date for that session in the published update.

The group forms part of the support available to people affected by colorectal cancer at University Hospital of North Durham, bringing together patients who may be living with the disease or adjusting to life beyond treatment.
