Families in Durham affected by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby will be able to come together for a special service of remembrance at St Cuthbert’s Church on North Road.

The service is scheduled for Wednesday 15 October at 7.15pm. It is one of two 2026 baby-loss memorial services announced by the chaplains of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The other is due to take place at Holy Trinity on Woodland Road in Darlington at 4pm on Sunday 11 October.

A service open to everyone

The Durham gathering is open to all, regardless of faith or background. Organisers say the services are intended to offer a supportive and compassionate space for anyone affected by the loss, including extended family members.

The services will provide time for quiet reflection, solidarity and remembrance. Families can attend whether their loss was recent or happened many years ago.

Saquib Ahmed, senior chaplain at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“These services of remembrance and thanksgiving are for anyone who has been affected by this very sad experience, including wider families and regardless of whether the loss was recent or in the more distant past.”

Contacting the chaplaincy team

Anyone seeking further information about the Durham service can contact the chaplaincy team on 0191 333 2183. The same number is listed for enquiries about the Darlington service.

The Trust said everyone is welcome to attend the memorial services, which are intended to honour babies and children who died before or shortly after birth and to give families an opportunity to remember together.
