Rail passengers travelling from Durham to London on Sunday 30 August 2026 will have an alternative to the busiest connecting routes, with LNER planning additional services to Bedford during engineering work on the East Coast Main Line.
The work is being carried out to install next-generation digital signalling equipment. LNER said there will be no direct trains into London King’s Cross while the engineering work is taking place, but customers travelling from Durham and other East Coast Main Line stations will still have options.
Additional LNER services will call at Durham
Two southbound services from Newcastle to Bedford are scheduled for 30 August. They will depart at 08:26 and 12:27, stopping at Durham, Darlington, Northallerton, York and Doncaster before continuing directly to Bedford.
Passengers arriving at Bedford can transfer to frequent Thameslink services to London St Pancras. LNER said the arrangement is intended to ease congestion and offer a more direct rail option while the normal London King’s Cross service is unavailable.
Two direct northbound LNER services will also run from Bedford to Newcastle. They are scheduled to leave Bedford at 12:49 and 16:57, calling at Doncaster, York, Northallerton, Darlington, Durham and Newcastle. Travellers joining these trains from London are advised to use Thameslink connections from London St Pancras to Bedford.
What Durham travellers need to know
Some journey planners may recommend routes through Sheffield, Nottingham or Derby during the engineering work. LNER warned that these alternatives can become particularly busy, especially northbound services leaving London St Pancras.
For the southbound trains, passengers should search LNER journeys on Sunday 30 August from their station to London St Pancras and select the option arriving at 13:37 or 17:37. The relevant direct-to-Bedford services leave Newcastle at the listed 08:26 and 12:27 departure times.
For northbound travel, customers should search for journeys from London St Pancras, select the option to change at Bedford, and choose the service departing London St Pancras at 11:36 or 15:36. These journeys connect with the LNER trains from Bedford to Newcastle, which call at Durham.
LNER has also released a short video explaining how to book the direct Bedford services. Anyone travelling on Sunday 30 August is advised to check the latest information in advance, as arrangements and journey details may change. Bookings and travel alerts are available through the LNER website.
