Durham rail passengers travelling to London on Sunday 30 August 2026 will have an unusual alternative to replacement buses: LNER is diverting two Newcastle-to-Bedford return services through Durham during major engineering work.

The planned work means no LNER trains will be able to operate between Peterborough and London King’s Cross. Instead, the diverted trains will call at Durham, Darlington, Northallerton, York and Doncaster before reaching Bedford, where passengers can change to frequent Thameslink services for London St Pancras International.

LNER says the arrangement should allow around 2,500 customers to complete their journeys by train. The two services are additional to other LNER trains planned for the day, although journeys using the diverted route will take longer than normal.

Durham departure times

The first southbound service will leave Newcastle at 08:26 and call at Durham at 08:39. It is scheduled to reach Bedford at 12:19.

A second southbound train will leave Newcastle at 12:27, calling at Durham at 12:40, and is due to arrive in Bedford at 16:16. The published intermediate times are:

  • Darlington: 08:58 and 12:58
  • Northallerton: 09:08 and 13:09
  • York: 09:30 and 13:31
  • Doncaster: 09:56 and 13:57

Returning to Durham from London

For the northbound journeys, passengers should take the 11:36 or 15:36 Thameslink service from London St Pancras to Bedford before changing to the diverted LNER train.

The first connection is due to leave Bedford at 12:49 and reach Durham at 16:41, before continuing to Newcastle at 16:58. The later service is scheduled to depart Bedford at 16:57, arrive in Durham at 20:46 and finish at Newcastle at 21:07.

Passengers returning to Durham will pass through Doncaster, York, Northallerton and Darlington on the way. The published arrival times for Durham are 16:41 and 20:46.

How the engineering work will affect other services

The disruption is linked to further work on the East Coast Digital Programme, which is intended to introduce digital in-cab signalling on part of the rail network. At other times on 30 August, LNER services will run on their usual route but will start and finish at Peterborough. Rail replacement services will then connect passengers from Peterborough to Bedford for onward travel.

LNER is encouraging customers to book the diverted trains through its website or app. When searching, passengers should choose London St Pancras International or London Terminals as their destination and add the “Change at: Bedford” filter. If the times match, the diverted services should appear in the journey results.

The trains are being operated as a trial, with LNER saying further diverted services could be considered during future line closures if the arrangement proves successful. Extra colleagues will be available to help passengers, but travellers are warned to expect longer journeys during the engineering work.
