Great North Run runners and spectators travelling from Durham will have extra LNER options on Sunday 13 September 2026, with additional trains scheduled to call at Durham station before the half-marathon in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The services are intended to help customers arrive in Newcastle in time for the annual event. LNER colleagues will also be among the participants, with more than 20 drivers, train managers, customer experience hosts, station staff and office-based employees from across the route preparing to run for the company’s charity partner, CALM.

LNER colleagues fundraising for CALM

The LNER team has raised several thousand pounds so far for CALM, or Campaign Against Living Miserably, which provides suicide-prevention services and mental-health support.

LNER said it has worked with CALM since October 2018 and has raised more than £780,000 for the charity’s work. A special LNER Azuma train named You Belong operates on the near-1,000-mile LNER route to raise awareness of CALM’s support.

Jake Orros, LNER’s Community Partnerships Manager, said: “We are so proud of our colleagues taking part in the Great North Run. The team has been training hard for the past few months and have done a phenomenal job raising money for our brilliant charity partner CALM. We want to say a big thank you to everyone who has sponsored our team of runners so far, every donation makes a real positive impact on a cause close to our heart.”

Simon Gunning, CALM’s chief executive, said: “We can’t wait to cheer on all the CALM runners at the Great North Run this weekend, including the brilliant LNER team.” He said the partnership had helped CALM’s services reach millions of people and would support its suicide-prevention helpline and free CALMzone mental-health app.
