A New College Durham student is aiming for a place at Henley Regatta after a breakthrough season that has seen him win medals in competitive rowing and receive recognition for his contribution to sport.

Hayden Macdonald, a Level 3 Sports Coaching student, has been rowing with Sunderland Rowing Club for less than four years. His performances this season have earned attention at regional and national levels, with New College Durham praising the commitment and determination behind his progress.

Medals across three competitions

Macdonald finished second overall and first in the club category at Nottingham Regatta in May. He also took third place in the Men's Under-21 Single Sculls event at the British Rowing Olympic Pathway competition, where he competed against some of the country's most promising young athletes.

His run of results continued at the Northern Beach Sprints Cup, where he claimed third place in the Men's Single Sculls. The performances have strengthened his reputation as one of the region's emerging rowing talents.

Macdonald said the results had encouraged him to raise his ambitions further: Achieving these medals has motivated me to push myself further and compete at an even higher standard.

Unsung Hero recognition

Alongside his results on the water, Macdonald was named a recipient of the Sports Newcastle Unsung Hero Award. The awards ceremony took place in June at Kingston Park Stadium and recognised regional volunteers, coaches and community champions.

Charlotte Winnard, a Sport Lecturer at New College Durham, said Macdonald's progress was particularly notable because he had reached this level within four years of taking up rowing.

Hayden's achievements are a fantastic example of what can be accomplished through dedication, hard work and a genuine passion for sport. To have reached this level within four years of taking up rowing is a truly remarkable achievement. He consistently demonstrates the commitment, professionalism and determination that we encourage across all of our sport programmes. Everyone within the New College Durham sports team is incredibly proud of what Hayden has achieved so far, and we are excited to see where his journey takes him next.

Next target is Henley Regatta

Macdonald's next goal is to qualify for Henley Regatta, described by the college as one of the most iconic and respected events in the rowing calendar. Qualification would mark another significant step in a sporting journey that has gathered momentum while he continues his academic studies.

New College Durham said his success reflects its commitment to supporting student athletes as they pursue sporting excellence alongside their education. The college also said his achievements offer an example to fellow students of what can be achieved by combining ambition with dedication.

As he prepares for future competitions and continues his pursuit of national success, Macdonald has the backing of the New College Durham sports team and wider college community.
