Patients leaving University Hospital of North Durham may spend the final part of their hospital journey in a dedicated discharge lounge while arrangements for going home or moving to their next place of care are completed.
The Durham facility was one of two highlighted by County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust during its first Love Your Lounge Month, a campaign held throughout August to explain how discharge lounges support safe and timely departures. The other lounge is at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
What happens in the discharge lounge
Patients who are ready to leave their ward can wait in the lounge while staff complete final arrangements. These may include preparing medication, providing discharge information, arranging transport, waiting for collection by family or friends, or organising a transfer to a community hospital or another place of care.
The lounge is intended to provide a calm and welcoming setting rather than leaving patients without support. Staff continue to care for patients while they wait, helping them stay informed and reassured during the transition out of hospital.
Julie Form, Outpatients and Clinical Site Manager, said: “Leaving hospital is an important part of a patient’s recovery, and we want that experience to feel safe, supported and as smooth as possible.”
She added: “Our Discharge Lounges help patients feel one step closer to home while they wait for final arrangements. They are calm and welcoming spaces where patients continue to be cared for, supported and kept informed.”
Advice for Durham patients and families
As part of the campaign, the trust encouraged patients and families to consider discharge arrangements as early as possible. Practical questions include how the patient will travel home, whether someone can collect them, and whether suitable clothing and footwear are available.
Families are also being asked to consider whether the patient will need support after arriving home. Thinking through these details in advance can help reduce uncertainty when a patient is ready to leave the ward.
During August, the trust shared patient information, staff resources, videos, posters, and stories about patient and family experiences. The campaign was designed to help people understand what to expect in a discharge lounge, as well as encourage colleagues to use the spaces consistently when planning a patient’s discharge.
Form said: “Love Your Lounge Month has been about raising awareness of these spaces, helping patients and families know what to expect, and supporting colleagues to use the lounges consistently as part of safe and timely discharge planning.”
Future support and further information
The trust is continuing to encourage staff to think “discharge lounge early” as part of discharge planning. It is also exploring opportunities for volunteers to support the lounges and help create a friendly, reassuring environment for patients.
Patients and families can find information about leaving hospital and what to expect in the Discharge Lounge on the County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust website.
